Definitely an interesting style. The ONLY problem I have is that all of these are personal interpretations of work that has already been done exactly the same. From the McFarlane Spiderman to the Jim Lee triple fold out from Uncanny X-Men.
The Supes, I'm not sure of because I'm not much of a fan.
Other than that, I think you have a pretty sharp style going.

I think he was trying to do homage pieces. Or are you saying that there have already been homage pieces done in this style (such as by 'Cheeks' or someone?)? edit:l Just re-read your post and I think I get your drift... you don't dig the homage aspect?

Well... as it seems with everything, that's a so-so thing with me.
I think his style is definitely unique enough where no one would believe he's deliberately copying to try to claim the works as his originals (and he also posted that they were not). I think he has a very energetic line work. For some reason I think most 'cartoony' styles do. The 'simplicity' contains a sense of flowing form- at least to me.
However, I get slightly uncomfortable about pieces like this because I've seen other -paid- comic book artists blatantly ripping off the works of others (poses done EXACTLY the same with the same detail, shading, etc) and putting said images in an actual book they were paid to do. Last time that most springs to mind was an old issue of wolverine where he and Ghost Rider (of the Dan ketch variety) take on Ogun in a museum. There are NUMEROUS pictures in that issue that are exact replicas of Jim Lee's wolverine images- one ripped directly from the new X-Men series cover- a 3/4 shot of wolverine with claws out.
Just an initial bad experience, really. Nothing personal against the artist here. I think he's a talented individual.

I get what Seraph is saying. It's kinda like when a band covers a song. Put your own take on it. Some people are gonna love it or hate it. But I appreciate it more when it's done as a 'live' thing and not put on an album that makes that band money. And it's always cool to see what one person did interpreted into another style. So this stuff is really cool to me to look at. (btw...there's actually a site that compares side by side 'ripped off' work, or just references in general. I can't remember it now, but some of the stuff was pretty obvious.)
I've always kinda wondered about this aspect though. Being an artist myself and trying to find references, I've turned to a lot of comic books, especially for perspective. But I'm always afraid of it looking to much like someones else's. Do you guys think this is a big deal when it's done as purely reference??
Sorry Shaun, didn't mean to sidetrack from you post here. Just a thought that came up. But I do love your work. The only thing right off is I feel like Supes should be bigger. I dunno. I guess it's maybe a style point, but I always see him as sorta a mac truck. The Macfarlane stuff is great. Such a different contrast to his sorta 'creepiness' with your cartoony spiders. And I like the way your colors make the X-men really pop out. I can't really complain about anything here. Good stuff. I'll check out more on your devaint page!
