Hope you guys don't mind, but I've always felt that each one of these shows deserve their own thread. And, since we were looking at my stuff here, I figured I'd show that slight bit of Ego and start this up.
First off, I want to thank Tom, Tim and Mark for taking the time to look through my stuff. Listening to show 13, and now 14, it's given me a lot to think about when approaching sequentials. You guys are really doing us all a big service, and I want you to know that it's appreciated.
That being said, my butt cheeks (and my drawings of 'clenched butt cheeks') feel like they've been violated. You guys tore into these pieces... and rightly so. In fact, I think you guys could have actually been harsher, and I appreciate you not continuously re-hashing repeated mistakes
As I listened to the show, I jotted down some thoughts. Here's what I was thinking...
Pg1. -Yup, I chickened out of drawing people into those panels. Thought they’d be too small and not worth the detail. -It was all done in Photoshop - I do my grid work and perspective there as well (not sketch-up) -Your ‘foreground’ comment was bang-on. -I’ve never used ‘sketch-up’… and am curious about it. -Yup, you guys are right – I really overused the blur. Pg2 -Um… I think I’m done with backgrounds. Lol -Wow, panel 2 being ‘sketch-up’ – again, never used it. -The ‘toysRus’ logo was scammed from the original. -All of the ‘one point perspective shots’ or ‘grid shots’ are again, because I used Photoshop. -You’re right about the ‘zooming in’ comment. I wasn’t zooming in.. I was roaming around – and I see how bad that is. Total agreement. -Lettuce vs. hand – it’s a hand. But the lettuce comment cracked me up. -Great advice on the fonts and spacing Pg3 -Butt checks - lol -Wrinkles on supersuits– I need ‘em to show fabric. -The head was not CG – not poser – wrong guess. I think this came from my laziness of reusing lines and outlines. -You guys are right – I drew them in different files and had clipped them in – I think that’s why some of it looks disconnected. Pg4 -Great point on the transition between pages. -You’re right – I’m not a writer. Cover -Most of those characters were me posing for reference. -Good point on the title -The line work, or lack thereof, was a stylistic choice.
Basically, I agree with all of your thoughts. Although I didn't use sketh-up, the BGs and building shots look bad. I used a lot of references and grid work, and failed to add any life to any of it. And, as already mentioned, I rarely do panel work, and it shows.
That being said, all of these shows have given me a itch for doing more panels (I can hear some people sighing right now). I'd really like to take the next 6 months to practice with them and maybe do up something again with some more familiar character (Spidey/Wolverine).
Again, thanks for all the harsh words, I've got a pretty thick skin - so no worries, they were well received.
-Ed
